For our feature interview this week on the FightWorks Podcast we
headed out and travelled up to the North County Fight Club in Carlsbad,
California to sit down with UFC fighter Jason Lambert, who defeated Renato “Babalu” Sobral in his last UFC appearance and recently signed a contract to fight against Wilson Gouveia at UFC 76. Lambert discusses what it’s like competing against taller opponents, his thoughts on the Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans fight, his hobby when he’s not fighting, and much more.
The topic of performance enhancing drugs has been a source of major
controversy in 2007, culminating in last week’s revelation that both Hermes Franca and Sean Sherk tested positive for steroids, and word from MMA icon Royce Gracie
that he will not challenge the California State Athletic Commission’s
test results showing that he also used steroids. Prominent authors
around the web have sounded off on the matter, from Sherdog’s Josh Gross, FightOpinion’s Zach Arnold, to No Holds Barred’s Eddie Goldman.
This week’s feature guest on the biggest Brazilian jiu-jitsu show on
the web is none other than Alliance black belt Fabio Clemente. Clemente
instructs at Studio X in New York City alongside Marcelo Garcia.
His titles include being the winner of the 1995, 1996 and 2006
Pan-American heavyweight, superheavy and open weight championship
titles. Clemente received his black belt all the way back in 1996, so
he has tons of experience to share with us.
We’ll also include an episode of The Black Belt Corner on this
week’s show. This time around we sit down with Marc Laimon, the head
instructor at the Las Vegas-based BJJ powerhouse Kobra Kai. Laimon, who
is not a person of many words but is known for not holding back his
opinions, also helps train MMA fighters for competition, including Joe Stevenson, Kendall Grove, and Heath Herring.

Our guest this week on The FightWorks Podcast is Romero “Jacare”
Cavalcanti, a sixth degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and the
head coach of Team Alliance. Jacare was one of the very few to receive
his black belt from Rolls Gracie before his untimely death in 1982. We
love these opportunities on the show when we can speak with someone who
can bring such exclusive experience to our listeners about the history
and culture of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

This week on The FightWorks Podcast we have our hands full. Zach Arnold of FightOpinion.com and I start the show off by discussing Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s claim that he was asked by PRIDE executives to lose by knockout or technical submission in his fight against Kazushi Sakuraba in exchange for a $2,000 bonus.
Cohost of The Fightworks Podcast Dan and I discuss the news that emerged this week that Royce Gracie tested positive for steroid use prior to his June 2007 fight against Kazushi Sakuraba.
In our main feature we speak with Dave Camarillo. Dave is well known
for his time as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor, his integration of
judo and BJJ, and his book Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu: Revolutionizing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Today in addition to teaching pure BJJ, he coaches mixed martial arts
fighters at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California,
where competitors such as Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Mike Swick train.

I was pretty nervous as the week was drawing to a close and I hadn’t
lined up much in the way of content for all of you, the mighty 600,000. Things happen fast around here sometimes, and we’ve lined up another great show.
We’re going to start off with an interview with Don Dunn, the director of the movie Never Submit. On May 27 in Episode 69 of The Fightworks Podcast, we spoke with the writer of the original script for Never Submit,
James Hergott, who has brought legal action against the production
company Imperia Entertainment, asking a judge to stop work on the
project until Hergott’s allegations have been straightened out. We
inquired with Imperia Entertainment at the time for their side on the
matter back then, and we’ve finally synched up with them. Dunn bring us
up to date on the project.
Wow this is another packed show. Let’s start with the big news: On the
weekend of May 26th in Brazil, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu National
Championships (”The Brasileiros”) were held in Rio de Janeiro. The
accomplished American grapplers Rafael Lovato Jr.
and Ryan Hall headed down to the tournament to participate. We’ll hear
from each as Ryan Hall tells us about what it’s like competing down
there compared to in the United States, as well as talk to Rafael
Lovato Jr. about his special accomplishment (sometimes a gold medal
means more than a gold medal).
Next, we’ll hear from Joanne of the MMA Girls. If you haven’t seen the
MMA Girls on YouTube or MySpace, it was probably just a matter of time.
Joanne and Lauren go over BJJ techniques and give their UFC predictions
in video format, and have become celebrities quickly, with their videos
reaching thousands of views very quickly, as in one of their vids
having been viewed 312,000 times!!!
In a sure sign of things to come, this week on The FightWorks
Podcast we welcome our first female guest, Kyra Gracie. Growing up in a
house with Renzo Gracie, Ralph Gracie, and Ryan Gracie, Kyra, who is
now 21, was exposed to Brazilian jiu-jitsu at a young age. No doubt one
of the top female grapplers in the world, the very popular Kyra
discusses how it’s possible to be a great competitor in combat sports
while remaining feminine. We’ll not only get an update on the knee
injury she suffered at the 2007 Abu Dhabis in New Jersey, but find out
what her plans are and get to know her a little as well.
Our second interview contains a conversation with writer/director James Hergott, who wrote the script for the film Never Submit,
a movie about mixed martial arts that had some prominent names from the
MMA community involved. Hergott has filed a lawsuit against Ken Eade
and Imperia Entertainment and asked for an injunction to stop work on
the film, as he claims that he has not been paid in some time. We
attempted to contact Mr. Eade for the story but did not hear back.
