Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti is the founder of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu
team Alliance, who has won the gold medal for BJJ teams at the World
Championships both in 2008 and 2009.
FILA,
the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, is the
governing body of international amateur wrestling. You may have heard
in the past couple of years that FILA has begun holding submission
grappling competitions in addition to organizing the world’s major
amateur wrestling events. Noteworthy Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors
like Ricky Lundell and Felicia Oh have competed at these events in recent years, traveling internationally to represent the United States on the world stage.
Well, it’s not long now! The Abu Dhabi World Submission Grappling
Championship is just around the corner! This weekend the ADCCs will
take place in Barcelona, Spain. If prior years are any indication, top
level grapplers from all corners of the world will put on a show that
people will be talking about for years. The event, which will be streamed online, looks to be incredible. Practically every big name in the world of submission grappling will be there.
The 2007 ADCC World Championship ended with an upset: Robert Drysdale defeated Alliance’s Marcelo Garcia
by sinking a head arm triangle early into the match. As the reigning
champion, Drysdale is now set to face the seemingly invincible Roger Gracie.
Have you ever heard of Roger Gracie? How about the name Romulo Barral? If you know those megastars from Gracie Barra then you should definitely also be familiar with Otavio Souza. Souza originates from Recife, just like fellow Gracie Barra big gun Braulio Estima.
Souza was probably first noticed here in the United States in 2007 when
he competed as a brown belt at the 2007 Pan-Ams against Kron Gracie, who was the only one who gave Souza any trouble that day.
KNUCKLE UP!!! Oh, reuniting is such sweet sorrow. So says KNUCKLE UP host EUGENE S. ROBINSON as he luxuriates in the return of UK jiu jitsu great JUDE SAMUEL and Samuel’s massive consumption of humble pie in light of MICHAEL BISPING’s visit to Sleepy Street [aka Queer Crossing] courtesy of DAN HENDERSON. KNUCKLE UP!!!
On the eve of that drastic fantastic EAST BAY RATS Fight-a-Thon that
never was [complete with cops and the OPD gang task force surrounding
the block because clearly all OTHER crime in Oakland has been solved],
his brief stint as a ref, and running down the railroad tracks
afterward with copies of FIGHT:
