If we can put all the name calling aside for a moment. I hope we can all be adults about this.

With the BJJ being on the Facebook forum being a mistake, which has been admitted as something that the club is looking to do in the future.

If your club is serious about having a BJJ class in the future, there are people here who will know people in yorkshire who may be willing to help you out. I'm sure if we can all put our toys back in the pram (from both sides) I'm sure there could be help for your club and we would be growing the BJJ Community.

I'm Kieran Hicken from the Bridlington Club. I wont be reading all of this nonsense but i'm going to clear things up for everyone regarding the initial question.

Their has been alot of confusion from our club members who dont really know anything about BJJ, they are majorly Shotokan students, some of them have done other disciplines for shorter periods of time in the past. They are just trying to defend their club from all of these blind accusations.

Neither me nor my father have ever graded in BJJ, although i am VERY interested in learning it and have a big respect for the discipline. Stuart Hicken trains and teaches in traditional Shotokan Karate and was graded to 3rd dan black belt by the KUGB over 25 years ago.

Al Docherty had arranged with us to start a BJJ class on a Saturday morning at our dojo. Al trained at the Rickson Gracie School and was graded in 2001 i think to Blue belt by Mauricio Gomes. I'm not sure what grade he is now, but with that being 8 years ago, i imagine he's gained a few grades since then.

The BJJ classes didnt end up happening as Al had an operation on his knee and has been in a wheel chair since whilst he heals. Although once he is better we will be starting the classes.

You are giving unnecessary grief to my Father and Sister which does anger me, however i will not lower myself to the trolls.

Bekz runs the Facebook group from her own obligation. She did not know what STAV or BJJ was and got them confused when updating the Facebook group, as she is a brown belt in Shotokan, thats about as far as her martial arts knowledge goes. Although she has been experimenting lately with Judo and Grappling. You can understand her frustration and why she would try to defend something she loves.

My Father is new to the internet and i agree can come accross rude, but that is not his intentions. He is dyslexic and has enough trouble trying to write/type as it is. He is a very good hearted, intelligent person and an excellent instructor, although this doesnt reflect well on here due to this so please stop now. This is why he asked Bekz to give his telephone number and address so anybody who really wanted answers could have contacted him by telephone or by visiting in person if it ment so much. Nobody has attempted either option as of yet, what a surprise.

Once again here are the details if anybody does want to contact us:

The Martial Arts & Fitness Center
Unit 5 Pinfold Lane
Bridlington
YO16 7AF

Call Stu on 07730562913 to request a membership form or for more information.

I've watched some competition videos from 1 or 2 of you on youtube, i wont say any names as im not here to cause conflict. I will say that i would be very happy to fight any one of you in competition in whichever style you want. If you would like to arrange this then it can be done with the info i have just given you.

I hope this matter is now resloved, i will not be making any more comments on this forum.

Kieran Hicken

Well that's just it, we've been thinking and putting our feelers out for a good instructor, but, and not being detrimental by this, our response now to put a BJJ class on at the club has gone very pear shaped, not saying we won't be having a class in he future, but this whole episode has certainly put the kibosh on it!!

We've been pissed at this on so many levels it's untrue, we were trying to introduce something still relatively new to the UK to our club.  Because of the prospectus of what we were wishing to offer the members, this has been thrown in our face, the other instructors own achievements an credentials have then been brought into doubt because of a whim off someone, who probably genuinely wanted to help, but went the complete wrong way about it, then got pissy himself and tried to drag the whole club into the mud.

It's not the best publicity for inter-club relations, I'm sure you;ll agree.     sigh!!

HI Kieran,

Thanks for this. I think if this had been said earlier it would have saved some people a lot of grief.

Hi Kieran,

Many thanks for posting. It is unfortunate that this thread has turned out the way it has, in one post you've answered pretty much every question that we've had. I hope that you and everyone at your club understands that this didn't start off as an attack on your school, it was simply an attempt to ascertain if the BJJ at your school was genuine. Partly out of protection for the art, and partly because we're always glad when new schools start up and join in.

Obviously it turned out that there was an error on the Facebook page regarding BJJ (which Bekz corrected), and I think we all hope that your experience on here hasn't put you off BJJ.

I do suggest that you thoroughly check Al's credentials, as obviously the last thing you want for your school is have someone who may have misrepresented themselves teaching for you. Mauricio Gomes spends a fair amount of time here in the UK at his son Roger Gracie's school, and there are a number of Mauricio's blackbelts here in the UK who were training with Mauricio at the time that Al says he was graded, who may be able to help you out should you decide to verify his grade.

Should you have any further questions regarding BJJ, I hope you would consider posting them here. There is a great deal of BJJ knowledge on this forum, including some of the first Brits to receive blackbelts in BJJ, and I'm sure we would all be more then happy to answer your questions.

If you're so confident you can beat people in 'any style', the British BJJ Open is on 21st July in Birmingham, why don't you sign up for it?

I'm sorry, but all of this discussion is rendered useless without a word from one man. The man who likes to call you his 'fren'.

No he didn't, he said:

'I will say that i would be very happy to fight any one of you in competition in whichever style you want'

So why not sign up for the BJJ British open in one months time from now? Pretty sure he won't be allowed to fight at purple, so a grudge match with rob t is off the cards but I'm betting he would get slaughtered at white belt level anyway.
